Mill Valley

The old town center of Mill Valley sits below the towering Mount Tamalpais, just a few exits north of the Golden Gate bridge.  Founded in 1834 by John Thomas Reed, Mill Valley got its name when Reed established a mill to provide lumber for a new military post being built in the Presidio, across the bay in San Francisco.

In the early 1900's, several long-standing organizations were built in Mill Valley, that continue to entertain and engage residents and visitors today - including the Mountain Play, the Dipsea foot race, the Tamalpais conservation club, and outdoor art club.

While old time residents claim Mill Valley has lost some of its more free-wheeling, rustic feeling in the last few decades, it maintains its commitment to the arts, land conservation and local culture.
