San Rafael

If Marin had a capital, it might be its oldest town of San Rafael.  Starting at its busy commercial district off 101, San Rafael stretches north several exits where the famous Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, houses Marin County's government offices.

San Rafael gets its name from the Mission San Rafael Arcangel, which was founded as a "helper" mission in 1817, to the famous Mission Dolores, in San Francisco.  The exisiting building is a replica of the original dwelling which was abandoned then demolished in the late 1800's.

San Rafael today, offers a broad collection of shops, ethnic restaurants, bars, farmers markets and starting points for hiking, biking, cycling and boating in Marin County.
