Just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, Sausalito today is something of a rich man's seaport. Save for a last bastion of rickety old houseboats that remind us of the more Bohemian days in Sausalito's history, much of Sausalito has become unaffordable for the marine service workers and craftsmen who still work along the waterfront.
Sausalito is gorgeous. Whether you stop in for a day (and by the way PLEASE don't drive 10 miles per hour down Alexander Ave. to gawk at the amazing views of the Bay and SF - park your car and WALK!) or manage to live here for a spell, you're in for breathtaking colors, light, and views.
Sausalito numerous restaurants and shops cater to a large number of tourists every year, but little local spots (and a marvelous old movie theatre) do exist. The town also supports local arts and hosts the famous Sausalito Art Festival each spring.
The stunning Marin headlands are reachable, by foot, bike, or car from the town. In just minutes, you and your surfboard could be at Rodeo Beach, or taking in view of the city from hilly hiking trails. Those with children can roll down to the Bay Area Discovery Museum where various art and science activities connect kids to the local environment and its diverse communities.
